As the ancient saying goes, “you either die a hero, or you make picks long enough to go down 3.93 units.” For those of you who tailed me through the playoffs, I am sincerely sorry. For those of you who faded me, you’re welcome. I had to spend some time away to collect my thoughts and dust myself off. I contemplated not even writing this, but the vibes are not going to navigate themselves. I don’t blame anyone who doesn’t trust me. I’m not sure I trust me. BUT THE SHOW MUST GO ON. What, am I not going to give you good folks picks for the NBA Freaking Finals? It’s time to climb ourselves out of this whole and make some cash. And what a matchup we have in store. The perennial contender against the newcomer. The team who’s been knocking on the door for the last half-decade against a sweet tea-loving, beer-drinking Slovenian who might just be the best player in the world. I have been sniffing around the vibes for this matchup for a week now and am ready to make a triumphant return. Let’s get into some picks.
Boston Celtics -6.5 (-108) - We’re going to take a risk here and bet on the Celtics at home. With their only two playoff losses this season coming at The TD Garden, we’re going to hold our nose and hammer them anyway. Game 1’s are always a feel out game and this Celtics team is a terrible matchup for the Mavericks. I foresee the Celtics coming out hot, motivated and ready to take control of the series. They’ll spread this Mavericks team out on the perimeter and force Jason Kidd to make some adjustments with the bigs he has on the court. My guess is he won’t make those adjustments in time for it to matter in game 1 and the Celtics roll tonight. (Keep an eye on the game 2 line because I definitely think the Mavericks will come away with one win in Boston). Lay the points, when the Celtics win, they usually win big.
3 Units on Luka Doncic Top Scorer for the Series (-180) - I know, that’s a lot of juice. But think about it. Is there really a world where anyone else is the leading scorer for the series? Barring injury (knocking on wood as I type), Luka Doncic will get his points no matter what Boston does. He’s averaged the most shots per game out of any player in the playoffs at 22 and his minutes are only going to increase in the Finals. Even at -180 I think it’s a fantastic price for an absolute lock. Tatum and Brown should put up numbers but will effectively cancel each other out while Luka gets every look he wants and will have one or two games where he flirts with the 40 point mark. Ride the Slovenian, you’re welcome. 3 UNITS ON IT, LET’S RIDE.
2 Units on Boston Celtics Series Spread -1.5 (+106) - The Boston Celtics are better than the Dallas Mavericks. That’s what this pick comes down to. I’ve heard every talking head discuss how hot the Mavs are and how they have they best player and how the Celtics have a history of folding under pressure. My vibes tell me otherwise. The Celtics have been the best team in the NBA all year. Am I a little scared of this pick? Yes. Does it make me feel alive throwing 2 units on it? HELL YES. This is one of those times where you have a vibe and you roll with it. Not only have the Celtics been the best team in the NBA all season but they are also probably the worst matchup possible for Dallas. With multiple long, strong and athletic wings/guards to throw at Luka and Kyrie, they won’t stop them, but they’ll sure make it hard. They also have spacing the Mavericks have yet to see this postseason. With Porzingis back, there is no one for their bigs to sag off of and camp in the paint. The Mavs bigs are going to have to come out on the perimeter and prove they have the lateral movement to do so effectively. For this bet to cash we just need the Celtics to win in 6 or less. I can definitely see Luka and Kyrie taking two games, but the Celtics are just better and have had enough failures in high-stakes moments to know what they need to do this series. Ride with the C’s, and pray Joe Mazzulla doesn’t get in the way.
This is my last post of the NBA Season, it’s been a blast even if we don’t end up profitable. I want to thank you all for reading. God speed.
Happy betting (responsibly),
