Orb Faithful,
Tomorrow is a unique day in the world of tennis. Two faces for the younger generation clash in the round of 32. Quite recently, I've talked about Alexander Bublik and Ben Shelton. God's plan is for them to cross paths in their campaign runs. I don't want to corner myself as a stan of either of these guys but listen, this is show business. Pageviews, ratings, and eyeballs are what drive the show + grow the game.
My major issue with tennis today is the older generation holding on to the past for too long. Rodger Rafa and Novak are and will always be the top of the mountain. But to restrict the younger generation from being themselves isn’t the way the make the games light any brighter. We saw this with Kyrgios but its when people get butt hurt about smashing a racquet or wearing basketball jerseys. You are so old and bitter if that stuff bothers you. I’m not going to buy stock in the idea that gatekeeping this sport to a younger and more diverse demographic will keep tennis white collar. We need young blood, and these guys are at the head of the pack for me. They actually make me want to watch tennis. I'll be even more frank: most of these ATP guys are dorks. Dry. No personality. Let the players be individuals and get as many new racquets in kids' hands as possible. The equation isn't hard.
I’m not looking for the next Rodger or Rafa. I want someone to bring a new energy to the game, the same new energy that drives the rest of professional sports in America. The NFL + NBA have swagger, we don’t. Bare minimum we should have the same social relevance as the PGA; it's a “country club” sport, and we pretend as if it couldn't translate to House of Highlights.
Also, if the US knew what was good for them, they would put their funding into training the stars of tomorrow and build a real hub here in Orlando. Its embarrassing that the United States can’t put forward a group of young men that could lead or be involved in the top ten. Embarrassing. I don’t want to keep taking shots but Andy Roddick will and I’ll let you listen to what he had to say:
Anyway moving on to the matchup. Right now the game spread is set at Shelton -2.5 games. That sounds right to me. The moneyline also tells you everything you need to know about this match as Bublik is a +205 dog. Shelton is better on clay than Sasha and thats all i’m going to think about this matchup. We’ve seen Bublik dissapear on clay before and not worth putting money behind him. If this was a grass court match then I would be all team Bublik and the line would be too. Shelton has won a claycourt title, it was maybe three weeks ago but still he did it. I’m backing Shelton.
To me this match is more of what I was talking about earlier. A real representation of the younger generation who has the talent and character that attracts people towards them. When they take the court people watch. I want more of that. Lets find the best of the best that also put on a show for the people and give the sport some clout with the kids.
Happy Clay Season,
Andy Tenniscourts
