A Written Apology to the Detroit Lions
One of the main points of the Orb is to take the emotion out of NFL predictions, and let the data do all the talking. That being said, the people behind the algorithm are regrettably human. Early this season the Lions had the #1 scoring offense and the #32 points allowed defense. This completely short-wired the Orb's predictive code and made them impossible to predict. It got so bad we had no choice but to declare them public enemy number one of the Orb. We even thought about suspending all Lions predictions as they were hurting our records so badly. In recent weeks, Dan "Man" Campbell and the Lions have turned things around and are owed an apology. For the many, many members of the Detroit coaching and playing staff that read our Substack, we at the Orb are sorry for slandering your good names.Â
In the last five weeks (weeks 9-13) the Lions have turned into our favorite team to predict. The Lions have been underdogs each of the last five weeks, and the Orb has predicted them to cover the spread in all five games. In four of these games, the Orb liked Detroit so much it also predicted them to outright win, all as +money upsets. The Lions won all four of the games we predicted them to win, and covered the spread in all five. The icing on the cake was that the Over/Unders we predicted for these games went 4/5. This means that in the last 5 games that involve the Lions, the Orb has accurately predicted 14/15 of all picks, or a 93.33% hit rate.Â
Detroit, we hope you can accept our apology and want to be the first Substack to ever thank you for your service.
